Lake Raven Campsite - Alla Prima

4x5's (roughly) Acrylic on Paper

Once in a long while I'm able to steal away to Lake Raven for some peace and quiet. But nothing as trivial as a vacation will keep me from noodling with the paints. Here are a few thumbnail sketches of my campsite. (Plein air and very quick).

I adore these...you have the control of keeping everything loose and suggestive with minimal colour and comp. Sounds like a nice place to get away from it all for a while.

I normally paint in oil, but doing colored sketches while vacationing sounds like a great idea. What size do you normally do? Also, would you mind sharing what you took with you (paint wise) since I'm sure you wanted to keep what you carried to a minimum. Love your work.

Lydia...

For sketches like these I keep them under 5x7. Working with acrylic outdoors can be challenging as they dry so quickly, which the slightest breeze accelerates. I use Golden acrylics in both the fluid and heavy body variety (the same as for my gallery work)...a truly superior brand. Not much else needed for an acrylic kit...a paper palette, cup of water, brushes etc. I'll be sure to take some pictures of the kit next time out!

Thanks,
David
